Aluminum entrance mat at an apartment complex with black-gray blend to camouflage dirt and debris.

This apartment complex has 17 floors and over 300 units (units vary in size between1–3-bedroom units). Approximately 550 tenants reside at this apartment building.

Mat dimensions for both entrances at this apartment building are 7ft x 12ft each, covering the distance between the two sets of entryway doors, creating a barrier from the sidewalk and the lobby.

The mat chosen for the installation was the BaseMat 300, due to its convenient roll-up design and dirt trapping capabilities.

Materials Needed

Materials Needed for Cleaning & Installation

The installation process begins by cleaning each of the existing recesses and removing dirt and debris from the concrete surface. This is done by scraping the hardened debris and sweeping the fragments with a broom.

Once the recess is cleaned and the build-up has been removed, the new mat can be rolled out flat fitting securely into place.
Note: Vinyl Filler may need to be trimmed in the field to compensate for any site irregularities.

The Outcome

The carpet inserts for this apartment complex were selected to maximize slip resistance. The chosen entrance mat insert color for this site was 90% black, 10% gray to camouflage accumulated dirt/debris/salt that is tracked in from outside.

MonoTuft Heavy duty carpet inserts are a blend of nylon and polypropylene, with monofilament fibers. They have an aggressive brush action that removes debris from the soles of shoes and absorbs moisture simultaneously. Perforations in this mat system allowed dirt, debris, and moisture to collect in the recess below for future cleaning.

24 pounds of dirt was retained annually in the recess well, in total, for both entrances in this apartment building.

Product Recommendations for this Industry

According to the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) having an entrance mat reduces the amount of dirt and debris tracked into a facility by 75% - 90% for a mat 15-25 ft in length. The International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA) estimates savings of about $600 in maintenance costs for every pound of dirt prevented from entering a facility.
