Deep cleaning an entrance matting system for a grocery store chain at a mid-large sized store in Minneapolis, MN.
Grocery Store Entrance Mat Details
This grocery store is in a busy location that sees an average of 7,500 customers per week with foot and cart traffic.
Estimated Cleaning Time: 4 Hours with 2 people. It is recommended to clean during off-peak or closed hours.
Materials Needed:
The cleaning process begins by removing the existing grids from the recess using a flat headed screwdriver to lift the individual grid sections in order to access the recess below. (The entrance grids are separated into individual smaller sections for easier maintenance).
To clean the entrance matting system- rails and carpet inserts; use a pressure washer with mild detergent and hot water to remove soil build-up.
Clean the recess by scraping hardened debris and sweeping the dirt from the concrete surface. Once all build-up has been removed the grids can be reinstalled.
104 pounds of dirt was removed from the recess below. The timeline between mat cleanings was 1 year.
Perforations in this mat system allowed dirt, debris, and moisture to collect in the recess below for future cleaning. Exterior brush carpet inserts have polypropylene bristles that were used for this high traffic application.
The carpet inserts for this grocery store were selected to maximize slip resistance. The chosen entrance mat insert color for this site was 90% black, 10% gray to camouflage accumulated dirt/debris/salt that is tracked in from outside elements.
According to the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI),an entrance mat 20-25 feet in length ensures 90% of soil/dirt is retained. An entrance matting system that includes a fall-through feature, a brush action, and drying capabilities allows larger soil particles to fall beneath the mat surface while also trapping soil and retaining accumulating moisture. The International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA) estimates savings of about $600 in maintenance costs for every pound of dirt prevented from entering a facility.
1 entrance mat + 7,500 customers weekly = 104 lbs. of dirt collected annually.
