Installing a new entrance matting system for a sporting goods store in Fargo, North Dakota.
In 2022, a sporting goods retailer upgraded their entrance matting system and elected the BaseTread 200 to be installed at their main building entrance. Chosen for its durability, strength, slip resistance, and convenient roll- up design. This aluminum entrance mat has proven to be a valuable asset in ensuring safety and cleanliness for all customers. The BaseTread 200 can handle 750 lbs. per wheel load, making it the ideal entrance solution to support large volumes of foot and wheeled traffic.
This large retail store is located in Fargo, ND and it’s 196,000 square feet are home to a wide selection of sporting goods, sportswear, footwear and entertainment for all ages. This retail chain has been continuing to grow to more and more locations throughout the US, and Ronick has provided entrance mats for about half of their locations so far. This retail location is more than just a store: they also have a restaurant, candy factory, arcade and even a Ferris wheel at their location drawing in 1,000s visitors from throughout the US daily.
The BaseTread 200 continues to perform well across all of their busy retail locations, all while contributing to the overall cleanliness, safety, and design aesthetic of this facility. Its combination of strength, safety, and ease of maintenance ensures that customers are starting their experience on the right foot.
Estimated Installation Time: 10 hours with 2 people. It is recommended to conduct maintenance during off-peak hours when minimal customers will be impacted. Another option for conducting maintenance during regular hours is to have an extra panel onsite, that can be swapped out in the event of spills and what not.
For this project, the team started by removing the existing futile mats, and they retrofitted the ½” depth of the BaseTread 200 aluminum entrance mat for the installation. The existing recess was deep cleaned for the new entrance mat. Any dirt, debris, or hardened material on the surface of the concrete was carefully removed by scraping away and sweeping up the excess rubble fragments. This ensures a clean, smooth base for the new aluminum entrance matting system.
Once the area was prepped, the new aluminum matting system was rolled out flat and positioned into place. The aluminum entrance mat fits securely into the recess, providing a stable, slip-resistant surface that is ready for use.
This retail location opted for a trench drain underneath the aluminum entrance mat to help drain any excess accumulated moisture. The perimeter frame was installed around the outer edge, next the individual mat sections were rolled into place. The customer also ordered an extra panel to have onsite to “hot swap” for maintenance if needed; gum removal, cleaning up spills etc. This way the maintenance work can be completed in sections during normal business hours without impacting the customer experience.
Aluminum entrance mats efficiently trap dirt, debris, and moisture at the door. By minimizing these fragments from being tracked throughout the establishment, they help maintain the appearance of the floors while also contributing to the heightened safety, especially in high-traffic settings where slip and fall accidents are more prone to happen.
The exterior brush carpet inserts are more aggressive at scraping larger debris such as snow and dirt from the bottoms of shoes than heavy-duty carpet inserts. The vigorous brushing action prevents debris from entering the facility. Additionally, these carpet fibers are engineered to absorb moisture quickly, preventing water from being tracked inside.
For this storefront entrance, the carpet inserts were carefully selected to maximize both slip resistance and dirt control. The chosen color combination—90% black and 10%gray—was specifically engineered to effectively mask dirt, debris, and salt that was tracked in from the outside, keeping the entrance looking clean and professional even in high-traffic settings.
One of the main attributes of this aluminum matting system is the perforations in the matting, which allow dirt, debris, and soilage to collect in the recessed well beneath the carpet. This design not only improves cleanliness but also ensures that debris fragments are contained and easily removed during routine cleaning. The trench drain that was also included with this system also helps remove additional moisture that has been retained.
In fact, this system has proven highly effective, with an estimated 26 pounds of dirt being retained annually in the recess well of the store entrance. This level of dirt retention contributes toa cleaner, safer, and more aesthetically pleasing environment, while also reducing maintenance efforts and improving the overall guest/visitor experience.
Entrance matting isn’t just about improving safety; it plays a fundamental role in maintaining a clean environment. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), a properly installed entrance mat 15-25 feet in length can inhibit 75% to 90% of dirt and debris from being tracked into a building.
In addition to minimizing dirt, entrance mats also provide sizable cost savings. The International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA) estimates that businesses can save about $600 in maintenance costs for every pound of debris prohibited from entering the store. This includes savings in cleaning supplies, labor costs, and even the prolonged lifespan of flooring materials.
For shopping malls and large retail stores, this not only means a cleaner, safer environment for guests, but also a more cost-effective approach to facility maintenance and enhanced design aesthetics.
1 entrance matting system + 165,000 sq ft of retail space = 26 pounds of dirt retained each year.
In large retail settings, safety and cleanliness are paramount, especially when it comes to the entrance areas. Shopping malls, stores, and shops see a variety of customers and guests from all over the world. Visitors wear an assortment of footwear and there is a large volume of foot and wheeled traffic, which means that having an entrance mat that is ADA compliant and strong is vital for measuring up to the demands of a popular retail location.
One solution that meets these needs is the BaseTread 200, a durable, ADA compliant, slip-resistant matting system specifically designed for high-traffic areas.
